Educating young people to prevent future alcohol misuse

Research has shown that effective alcohol education for young people can prevent future alcohol misuse. Education programmes:

  • address knowledge, skills and attitudes
  • provide age-appropriate and culturally-sensitive information
  • challenge young people's misconceptions about the norms of their peers' behaviour and their friends' reactions to alcohol use
  • use interactive teaching techniques such as discussion, small group activities and role play
  • involve parents/carers as part of a wider community approach.

Derby's 'Bottle It' project was developed by the city's Healthy Schools Team in 2007/08, funded by local Communities for Health funding, the Community Safety Partnership and Teen Check. All secondary schools across Derby have been given resources to deliver the programme, which has four main strands:

  • a theatre/dance workshop programme highlighting key messages around alcohol which Year 10 pupils deliver to Year 8 pupils of feeder schools
  • a programme that's specific to alcohol and related anti-social behaviour for Year 9 pupils
  • targeted work with vulnerable pupils
  • work with parents to tell them about the signs and impact of alcohol misuse.
