Between December 2007 and May 2008 there were 12 incidents in which firearms were discharged in Derby city.
The Multi-Agency Gangs Team was set up in April 2009 with staff seconded by Derby Community Safety Partnership, Derby City Council, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Police, Derby Homes and Derbyshire Probation Service. The team is located in and managed by Derby Community Safety Partnership.
The Team focuses on prevention and reduction of the involvement of both young people and adults in gang activity. Shortly after setting up, they received over 200 referrals from schools, parents, police and other key agencies.
Each referral received by the team is risk assessed and an intervention package is put in place to deter them away from gang involvement. The interventions used include music workshops, Ozbox and youth crime prevention programmes. The team also work with parents of young people.
The Community Safety Partnership and Police also pay for a specialist mediator to work in the city with the aim to reduce conflict between gangs and individuals, and assist young people in exiting gang activity. The mediaton work assists to engage with the hierarchy of the two main groups (A1 and BCT) to try to broker an end to their dispute and divert them away from violence.
The Team have developed a gang awareness programme for primary schools. A Secondary School programme has been developed and is being delivered this academic year within PSHE lessons. This lesson plan has been very well received by young people
A gun and knife amnesty was held in June 2009 and during the four week amnesty seventy two firearms, several hundred rounds of ammunition and over two hundred knives (including weapons, daggers and swords) were handed in. The amnesty has been an important and successful part of the overall work by a number of different agencies to tackle gang related crime
Working with the Community is also key to the success of the work. The Community Advisory Group have been representing the views of the community and consulting with us on responses to the gang issue. The group has its own terms of reference and regularly meets to support and advise the police and partners about current tensions within the community as well as advising on the suitability of proposed interventions/actions. The 100 man march held in September 2009 being an excellent example of the community taking a stand against gang activity. The community advisory group can and is also convened on a bespoke basis in response to critical incidents within the division.
