Burglary reduction scheme reaches milestone

Derby Community Safety Partnership’s Crime Prevention Team has completed work on their 10,000th property this week.
Since the security improvement project began in 2001 the team has provided vital crime prevention advice for people living in the city.
And, where required, specially-trained joiners fit security measures including alarms, window and door locks and Smartwater property marking for people who have been the victim of burglary or who may be at risk of such crime.
Much of the service is free of charge to people including for Derby Homes tenants and residents as well as elderly and vulnerable people in the city.
The 10,000th resident to be supported is Mr Richard Barber (52) who lives in Allenton, where the team have added extra security to doors and windows for him and his neighbours and also painted anti climb paint on gates in elderly neighbours’ gardens.
Mr Barber said: “It’s nice and quiet here but it is good to have the extra security as I have mobility problems and want extra peace of mind in my home.”
The milestone is part of Derby Community Safety Partnership, Derbyshire Constabulary and Derby City Council’s commitment to Inspiring Derby Week 2010 (w/c June 28) which will culminate in an event in the Market Place on Friday July 2nd entitled ‘The Police Experience’.
The crime prevention team will be among the displays set up between 10.30am and 3.30pm to convey the variety and complexity of work by the police and their partners.
Inspector Nick Daines, Head of Crime Prevention at the CSP, explained: “The security improvement work undertaken by the CSP’s crime prevention team in partnership with Derbyshire Constabulary and Derby City Council is an important front-line service that supports local people both in a practical sense and in reducing their fear of crime.
“Our team works closely with the police and with Derby Homes to ensure that people whose homes have been targeted by burglars have the necessary security in place to reduce the risk of repeat crime – which unfortunately can sometimes be the case.
“We also work proactively to identify people in local communities who are vulnerable to crime to reduce the risk of them falling prey to criminals. This also gives them peace of mind that they have the security in place to deter would be burglars.”
Maria Murphy, Director of Housing & Customer Service at Derby Homes said: “We have been working in partnership with the CSP now for many years to improve the environment and reduce the fear of crime on council estates in Derby. Many tenants have benefited from the scheme and feel safer and more secure in their homes as a result.”
