Family Justice Centre warns of forced marriage signs

Young people who are at risk of a forced marriage may feel unable to talk about what is happening to them.
If you have any concerns about a forced marriage, contact the Family Justice Centre on 01332 25687. We support female and male victims of any aged.
Warning signs of someone being at risk of a forced marriage include:
• extended absence from school/college, truancy, a drop in performance, low motivation, excessive parental restriction and control of movements, a history of brothers/sisters leaving education early to marry
• poor attendance in the workplace, poor performance, parental control of income and limited career choices
• evidence of self-harm, treatment for depression, attempted suicide, social isolation, eating disorders or substance abuse
• evidence of family disputes/conflict, domestic violence/abuse or running away from home.
The Family Justice Centre can help by:
• explaining the criminal justice system and arranging for statements to be taken by the police, where necessary
• putting in place a full package of support and making referrals to other services that can help
• arranging support to attend court if needed
• working with solicitors from Derby City Council - we can apply for a Forced Marriage Protection Order
• installing extra security at a victim’s home to make them more secure in their own property.
